Health & Performance Testing in Chester

Chester has hospitals and gyms aplenty, but clinical-grade DEXA, VO2 Max and RMR testing has always meant a referral wait or a drive out to a city lab. TELOMYX brings that equipment to you instead, at Fortitude Gym on Knutsford Way, minutes from the city walls and the Sealand Road corridor. Whether you live in Hoole, train in Upton or commute in from Christleton, you get hospital-grade body, fitness and metabolic data without the travel. Our in-house NHS doctor handles your DEXA referral, and every test comes with a full medical report within 48 hours.

Why TELOMYX for testing in Chester

Chester is well served for hospitals and high-street gyms, but for clinical body and metabolic testing the fixed options have meant a long NHS referral wait or a paid appointment across the border in Liverpool or out towards Manchester. For anyone in Hoole, Boughton, Upton or Westminster Park, that is a half-day round trip for tests that take minutes. TELOMYX brings the same clinical-grade equipment to Fortitude Gym on Knutsford Way instead.

  • Clinical-grade Hologic DEXA scanner, the same technology used in NHS bone-density and research clinics. Available at Fortitude Gym, Knutsford Way (CH1 4NS), free on-site parking and a mile and a half from the city centre, with no cross-border drive.
  • Metabolic cart VO2 Max, not consumer wearables. The gold standard for aerobic capacity. Tested at Fortitude Gym, with no university sports-lab waiting list.
  • Full medical report within 48 hours, not a one-page printout. Ready to share with your Cheshire GP, consultant or coach.
  • Founded by an NHS doctor. No supplements, no transformations, no upsells. Clinically led and serving Chester and West Cheshire.

Why Chester clients book TELOMYX

These are just a handful of the most common reasons people in Chester book with us. For the full list, hit Goals in the top navigation bar to see every use case TELOMYX testing supports.

  • Training for the Chester Marathon or Chester Half. The autumn MBNA Chester Marathon and the spring half are the city's flagship road races, looping out from the Roodee into the Cheshire and North Wales countryside. A VO2 Max test gives you data-driven heart-rate zones so your mileage turns into race-day pace, and an RMR test sets the fuelling baseline behind it.
  • Sharpening a 10K. Runners targeting the Chester 10K or the Cheshire 10K out around Hoole Bank and Picton who want to know whether their training is genuinely raising their ceiling. VO2 Max and RMR together answer that objectively rather than by feel.
  • Tracking parkrun progress. Regulars at Chester parkrun in the Countess of Chester Country Park, or the trail loops at Delamere Forest parkrun, who want to know whether a 5K PB is a real fitness gain or just a fast morning. A measured VO2 Max tells you where your ceiling actually sits.
  • Health screening in your 40s and beyond. Cheshire West and Chester carries a stark health divide: its Joint Strategic Needs Assessment reports male life expectancy in the most deprived areas running more than seven and a half years lower than in the most affluent, with circulatory disease the single biggest driver of that gap (Cheshire West and Chester JSNA). Visceral fat, measured directly and only by DEXA, is one of the primary modifiable risk factors. A DEXA gives you a VAT figure in grams, and paired with an RMR it builds a clinical-grade cardiovascular and metabolic baseline before symptoms appear, with no GP referral wait.
  • Rowing and the River Dee. Chester is one of the most important rowing reaches in the country, with Royal Chester (founded 1838) and Grosvenor (1869) sharing a two-kilometre stretch of the Dee. VO2 Max is the key endurance metric for any rower, cyclist or triathlete, and pairing it with DEXA tells you exactly what power-to-weight you are working with.

For all other goals (longevity, women's health, weight loss, sport-specific preparation and more), see Goals in the top navigation.

What our Chester clients say

Recent reviews from clients tested at our Chester venue. Verified via Google Business Profile.

★★★★★

"I'd trained at Fortitude for the best part of two years and genuinely couldn't tell whether the work was adding muscle or just weight. The DEXA broke it down limb by limb and showed the lean mass was going on, but so was visceral fat I had no idea about. It changed how I ate and trained almost overnight."
· Upton · DEXA

★★★★★

"Booked a VO2 Max in the build-up to the Chester Half. I'd been hammering every run at the same pace and the test showed exactly why I kept stalling. Trained to the measured zones instead, took nearly four minutes off and didn't have to drive to Liverpool to get the data."
· Hoole · VO2 Max

★★★★★

"After perimenopause my weight stopped responding to anything that used to work. The RMR test at Fortitude put an actual number on my metabolism and it was a fair bit lower than the apps assumed. For the first time I had something solid to plan around with my dietitian rather than guessing."
· Christleton · RMR

Chester FAQs

Do any of the tests require a referral or GP appointment?

Only DEXA requires a referral, as it involves a small amount of ionising radiation. You do not need a GP appointment first. TELOMYX has an in-house NHS doctor who issues your DEXA referral as part of the booking process at no extra cost. VO2 Max and RMR tests require no referral and can be booked directly. If you already have a referral from your GP or a specialist, upload it at checkout.

Where in Chester can I get tested?

Fortitude Gym on Knutsford Way (5 Knutsford Way, Sealand Industrial Estate, CH1 4NS) is our current Chester venue, with free on-site parking and easy access from Hoole, Upton, Blacon, Saltney and the city centre. Because TELOMYX is mobile, we can also bring our DEXA, VO2 Max and RMR equipment to your gym or workplace anywhere across Chester and West Cheshire.

How much do tests cost in Chester?

DEXA scans are £120, VO2 Max tests are £150 and RMR tests are £110. The DEXA + RMR bundle is £210. Multi-test bundles offer the biggest savings; see our bundles page.

Can I get all three tests in one session?

Yes, and it's how most clients book. A full DEXA + VO2 Max + RMR session takes around 60 to 75 minutes and gives you a complete picture of body composition, cardiovascular fitness and metabolism in a single visit at Fortitude Gym, Chester.

Are your tests suitable for athletes training in Chester?

Absolutely. We work with runners preparing for the Chester Marathon and Chester Half, rowers on the Dee, cyclists heading into the Cheshire and North Wales lanes, and CrossFit and team-sport athletes across the city. VO2 Max identifies your aerobic ceiling, RMR sets your fuelling baseline and DEXA tracks lean mass changes across a training block.

What is the difference between DEXA, VO2 Max and RMR?

DEXA measures what your body is made of (fat, muscle, bone). VO2 Max measures how fit you are (your aerobic ceiling). RMR measures how many calories you burn at rest (your metabolic baseline). They answer completely different questions, which is why most clients book all three together to get a full picture of body, fitness and metabolism. All three are available at Fortitude Gym, Chester, individually or in any combination in a single session.

Which test should I start with?

It depends on your goal. For body recomposition, weight loss or bone health, start with DEXA. For endurance training or sport performance, start with VO2 Max. For nutrition planning or calorie targets, start with RMR. If you're not sure, the DEXA + RMR bundle is the most popular starting point because it gives you both your body composition and your metabolism in one session. All options are bookable at Fortitude Gym, Chester, with free on-site parking.

How often should I get re-tested?

Most clients book DEXA every 3 to 6 months to track body composition changes. VO2 Max is typically re-tested every 6 to 12 months or before a major event (Chester Marathon, Chester Half, a triathlon, season start). RMR is more stable and usually only needs repeating if you've had significant weight change or a big shift in training load.

Can you bring the scanner to my gym in Chester or West Cheshire?

Yes, that's our model. TELOMYX is a mobile clinical-grade service. If you run a gym, sports club, workplace wellness programme or training facility anywhere across Chester and West Cheshire, including Hoole, Upton, Saltney, Ellesmere Port or the surrounding villages, we can run a full DEXA + VO2 + RMR session on-site. Get in touch for partnership pricing.

How do I get to Fortitude Gym in Chester?

Fortitude Gym is at 5 Knutsford Way, Sealand Industrial Estate, Chester, CH1 4NS, just off Sealand Road about a mile and a half north-west of the city centre. By rail: roughly 1.5 miles from Bache station and 2 miles from Chester's main station. By car: free on-site parking is available for all TELOMYX clients on the estate.

Will my results be explained to me on the day?

Yes, for every test. As part of every session, a member of the TELOMYX team will walk you through your results and give you targeted recommendations based on your own biology and goals, not a generic explanation but specific next steps for you. Your full medical PDF report follows by email within 48 hours, ready to share with your coach, GP or dietitian. This results walkthrough happens at your Chester appointment at Fortitude Gym before you leave.

Will my private health insurance cover the cost?

Most UK private health insurance policies don't routinely cover preventative DEXA, VO2 Max or RMR testing as they're considered wellness or performance rather than medical necessity. If your scan is for a clinical reason (for example, low bone density investigation), check with your insurer. We can provide a full medical report and referral letter to support any claim.
