Two ways to book your RMR test in Widnes

An RMR test on its own tells you exactly how many calories your body burns at rest, the true baseline that standard calorie calculators estimate and often get wrong by 200–400 kcal per day. Pairing it with a DEXA scan in the same session at TransFit adds your full body composition picture: fat mass, lean mass and visceral fat to medical precision. Most clients who book for nutrition or weight management combine both, because knowing your metabolic rate without knowing your body composition (or vice versa) gives you half an answer.

Why get an RMR test with TELOMYX in Widnes

Standard calorie calculators estimate your metabolic rate from population averages. For any individual they can be off by 200–400 kcal per day, enough to make the difference between losing weight and maintaining it, or between fuelling right for a training block and running on empty. Until TELOMYX, getting a properly calibrated RMR test near Widnes meant a university sports-science lab or a specialist clinic in Liverpool or Manchester with limited availability. We fixed that by bringing clinical metabolic-cart testing directly to TransFit, Cross Street, with on-site parking.

Direct measurement, not an estimate

Every standard calorie calculator (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin-St Jeor, MyFitnessPal) uses population-average formulas. RMR testing measures your actual metabolic rate from your exhaled breath. For the same height and weight, individual RMR can vary by 400 kcal or more. We test at TransFit, Cross Street, Widnes (WA8 6HS), with on-site parking and no drive into a Liverpool or Manchester clinic.

What our Widnes RMR clients say

Recent reviews from clients who had an RMR test at our Widnes venue. Verified via Google Business Profile.

★★★★★

"I'd been tracking calories for months with nothing to show for it. My RMR came back around 230 calories below every calculator I'd used, which explained the lot. Finally have a real number to build from instead of an average that clearly doesn't apply to me."
· Hough Green · RMR

★★★★★

"Building up the mileage with Widnes Running Club and wanted to know I was fuelling properly. The RMR result anchored the whole nutrition plan. Knew exactly what to eat on easy days versus long-run days and felt strong all the way through the block."
· Appleton · RMR

★★★★★

"Perimenopause arrived and suddenly nothing I did made any difference. The RMR test confirmed my metabolic rate had shifted, which made months of frustration finally make sense and gave me a concrete number to work from with my nutritionist. Easy to get to at TransFit, too."

What's included in your £110 RMR test

Six things every Widnes RMR client gets, as standard.

Resting metabolic rate (kcal/day)

Your exact calorie burn at complete rest, the true baseline and not a population-average estimate. The number every nutrition plan should start from. Measured at TransFit, Cross Street, Widnes (WA8 6HS), using a clinical metabolic cart.

Total daily energy expenditure

Your RMR scaled to your actual activity level, giving you a realistic daily calorie target for maintenance, fat loss or muscle gain.

Respiratory exchange ratio (RER)

Shows whether your body is predominantly burning fat or carbohydrate at rest, relevant context for metabolic health and nutrition strategy.

Why Widnes people book an RMR test

These are just a handful of the most common reasons people in Widnes book an RMR test with us. For the full list, hit Goals in the top navigation bar.

  • Weight loss that has stalled. Clients who have eaten at what a calorie app called a deficit for weeks or months with no results. The most common explanation is that their actual RMR is measurably lower than the formula estimate, so the deficit never existed. Halton has premature cardiovascular death rates significantly above the England average (Halton JSNA 2024), and many of the drivers behind that are metabolic, so knowing your real calorie baseline is one of the most direct things you can act on.
  • Fuelling for parkrun and club running. Members of Widnes Running Club and regulars at Widnes parkrun who want to fuel training accurately rather than by feel. RMR gives you a real calorie number; your training gives you the load; your nutrition supports both rather than working against them.
  • Metabolic changes from hormones or medication. Women going through perimenopause or menopause who notice that an approach that previously maintained their weight no longer does. An RMR test quantifies the metabolic shift so any adjustment is based on data, not guesswork.
  • Rugby league and high-volume training. Players and gym-goers across the area who worry they are underfuelling during heavy weeks. RMR combined with an activity multiplier gives a real total daily calorie requirement, the floor below which performance and recovery will suffer.
  • Building a nutrition plan with a professional. Anyone working with a dietitian, nutritionist or coach in the Halton area who wants to give their practitioner a measured RMR rather than a formula estimate as the starting point for the plan.

How your RMR test works at TransFit Widnes

1

Book online in 60 seconds. Pick a slot at TransFit, Unit 1 Cross Street, Widnes (WA8 6HS). No referral needed. Just book, follow the pre-test guidelines and turn up.

2

Read your pre-test guidelines carefully. You will receive a confirmation email with the full pre-test guidelines for an RMR test. These cover fasting requirements (typically 4 to 6 hours with no food or caloric drinks), no caffeine beforehand, and no intense exercise for at least 12 hours before your appointment. Please read them in full. The guidelines matter more for RMR than for almost any other test, as recent food, caffeine or activity directly elevates your metabolic rate and will skew the result upward.

3

Arrive and get tested. A member of the TELOMYX team meets you at TransFit. You will be set up on a reclined couch and fitted with a transparent metabolic canopy that sits over your head and upper body. You lie still and breathe normally for around 20 minutes while the system analyses your exhaled gases, measuring your oxygen consumption and CO2 production to calculate exactly how much energy your body burns at rest.

4

Results walkthrough and targeted advice. A member of the TELOMYX team walks you through your RMR result, your estimated total daily energy expenditure at different activity levels, and your respiratory exchange ratio. You will get specific recommendations based on your own metabolism and goals, not a generic printout explanation but actionable advice tailored to you.

5

Full medical PDF report within 48 hours. Comprehensive report emailed to you with your RMR, TDEE estimates at multiple activity levels, respiratory exchange ratio and interpretation. How much does an RMR test cost in Widnes?

A standalone RMR test is £110. The DEXA + RMR bundle is £210 and is the most popular option for clients focused on nutrition and body composition. See our bundles page for multi-test options.

How accurate is an RMR test compared to calorie calculators?

Calorie calculators (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin-St Jeor, MyFitnessPal estimates) use population-average formulas. For any individual they can be off by 200 to 500 kcal per day, enough to undermine months of dieting or training. An RMR test measures your actual oxygen consumption and CO2 production, which is a direct physiological measurement, not an estimate. If you are making nutritional decisions based on a calculator, you are working from a guess.

Do I need to fast before an RMR test?

Yes. You should fast for at least 4 to 6 hours before your test: no food, no caloric drinks, no caffeine. Avoid intense exercise for at least 12 hours beforehand and arrive in a rested, calm state. Full pre-test guidelines are sent when you book. Following them matters more for RMR than for almost any other test: recent food, caffeine and exercise all temporarily elevate your metabolic rate and will push your result above your true baseline.

What does my RMR result actually tell me?

Your RMR (in kcal/day) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest. It accounts for roughly 60 to 70% of total daily energy expenditure for most people. From your RMR, your report includes estimated total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) at different activity levels, giving you a realistic daily calorie target for maintenance, fat loss or muscle gain. Your result also includes your respiratory exchange ratio (RER), which indicates whether your body is predominantly burning fat or carbohydrate at rest.

Why might my RMR be lower than expected?

Several factors can depress RMR below population-average estimates: prolonged calorie restriction (metabolic adaptation), low muscle mass, thyroid dysfunction, certain medications, and age-related hormonal changes, particularly in women around perimenopause and menopause. If your measured RMR comes back lower than predicted, the TELOMYX team will discuss the likely contributing factors and what that means for your calorie targets going forward.

Should I book RMR on its own or with a DEXA scan?

It depends on your goal. If your primary question is about calorie targets or why your current approach is not working, RMR alone answers it. If you also want to understand your body composition, specifically how much of your weight is fat, muscle and bone, then the DEXA + RMR bundle gives you both in a single session at TransFit. Most clients focused on body recomposition, weight management or metabolic health book both, because knowing your calorie burn without knowing your body composition gives you half the picture.

How often should I retest my RMR?

RMR is relatively stable over time. Most clients retest every 6 to 12 months, or when something significant changes: a major shift in weight, a meaningful change in training volume, starting or stopping medication, or a hormonal transition such as perimenopause. Clients managing weight or fuelling across a race season often retest at the start of each main training block.

Is RMR testing useful for endurance athletes?

Yes, particularly for athletes in high-volume training. RMR gives you the calorie floor, the minimum intake required to maintain basic physiological function. Athletes who underfuel relative to training load commonly experience suppressed performance, slower recovery, increased injury risk and, over time, hormonal disruption. Knowing your RMR and applying an accurate total energy expenditure multiplier means you can fuel your training properly rather than by feel or generic online estimates.

Is an RMR test the same as a DEXA scan?

No. They measure completely different things. A DEXA scan measures what your body is made of: fat mass, lean mass and bone mineral density. An RMR test measures how much energy your body burns at rest. They complement each other well, which is why the DEXA + RMR bundle is our most popular option. DEXA tells you your body composition; RMR tells you your calorie baseline. Together they give you the two numbers most nutrition plans need but rarely start from.

What does the RER (respiratory exchange ratio) on my report mean?

The respiratory exchange ratio is the ratio of CO2 you produce to O2 you consume. At rest, an RER near 0.7 indicates predominantly fat burning; near 1.0 indicates predominantly carbohydrate burning. Most people fall between 0.75 and 0.90 at rest. A high resting RER can reflect high carbohydrate intake in the hours before the test (which is why fasting matters), chronic stress, or a metabolic state where the body struggles to access fat stores efficiently. Your report includes your RER with a plain-English interpretation.
