Two ways to book your DEXA scan in Stockport

Booking DEXA on its own gives you the gold-standard view of your body composition, visceral fat and bone density. Adding RMR in the same session shows you exactly how many calories your body burns at rest, so you can pair body data with metabolic data and build nutrition or training decisions on both. Most clients combine the two; standalone DEXA is just as quick if body composition is all you need.

Why book a DEXA scan with TELOMYX in Stockport

The nearest fixed-location DEXA clinics to Stockport sit in Manchester city centre. Fixed means you have to go to them: a drive up the A6 or round the M60, then city-centre parking, for a scan that takes seven minutes. If you live in Bramhall, train in Cheadle Hulme, work in Hazel Grove or commute from Marple, that's the best part of an afternoon gone. TELOMYX brings the same clinical-grade Hologic equipment to B-Fit Gym in Hazel Grove, with free parking right outside and no trip into town.

Clinical-grade Hologic DEXA scanner

The same scanner technology used in NHS osteoporosis screening and university research labs. Not a fat scale or a gym body-comp device. Available at B-Fit Gym, Hazel Grove (SK7 5DA) — free on-site parking and no drive into Manchester for a seven-minute scan.

What our Stockport DEXA clients say

Recent reviews from clients who had a DEXA scan at our Stockport venue. Verified via Google Business Profile.

★★★★★

"Eighteen months of lifting and I genuinely didn't know if I was building muscle or just getting heavier. The DEXA put real numbers on it: lean mass up, but visceral fat had crept up too. Completely reset how I trained the next block. So much better than guessing on the scales."
· Bramhall · DEXA

★★★★★

"Got the DEXA after my GP flagged my bone density was worth checking given a family history of osteoporosis. The report was detailed enough to take straight to my consultant and saved months of NHS waiting. Booking near home in Hazel Grove rather than going into town made it easy."
· Marple · DEXA

★★★★★

"Scanned at the start and end of a 12-week recomp block. The bathroom scales had barely moved but the DEXA showed I'd lost fat and added lean mass. Without it I'd have assumed the whole thing had failed. Genuinely changed how I judge progress now."
· Cheadle Hulme · DEXA

The dangerous fat around your organs that drives metabolic disease risk. Measured in grams, not estimated.

Bone mineral density

At the lumbar spine and hip, with T-scores and Z-scores. Same protocol used in NHS osteoporosis screening.

Why Stockport people book a DEXA scan

These are just a handful of the most common reasons people in Stockport book a DEXA scan with us. There are many more. For the full list, hit Goals in the top navigation bar to see every use case TELOMYX testing supports.

  • Strength and body recomposition tracking. Gym lifters across Stockport who want to know whether their cut or bulk actually shifted muscle versus fat. DEXA is the only scan that separates the two in grams, by limb, so you know exactly which direction your body is moving.
  • Bone health screening over 40. The same scanner that measures your body composition reports your bone mineral density T-scores and Z-scores at the spine and hip, with no GP referral wait. Useful for anyone with a family history of osteoporosis or who has been in a prolonged calorie deficit.
  • Visceral fat and cardiovascular risk. Stockport has the highest cardiovascular disease prevalence of any Greater Manchester borough at 9.5%, compared with 5.3% in Manchester, largely linked to its older population (Frontier Economics for Health Innovation Manchester, 2025). Visceral fat is one of the primary modifiable risk factors. DEXA gives you a direct VAT measurement in grams so you know your actual risk picture before symptoms appear, not an estimate from a set of scales.
  • Tracking real fat loss. Clients on a weight-loss programme who want honest data instead of bathroom scales. DEXA tells you whether the weight dropped is fat or lean tissue, which determines whether the plan is working.
  • Endurance and trail athletes on heavy training blocks. Runners preparing for the Stockport 10K, the Hatters Half or a Peak District trail race who want to make sure lean mass is staying on during high-volume training phases.

For all other goals (longevity, women's health, weight loss, sport-specific preparation and more), see Goals in the top navigation.

DEXA scan in Stockport: FAQs

Do I need a referral for a DEXA scan in Stockport?

Yes. DEXA is a medical investigation so a referral is required. You don't need a GP appointment first. TELOMYX has an in-house NHS doctor who issues your referral as part of the booking process at no extra cost. If you already have a referral from your GP or consultant, upload it at checkout.

How accurate is a DEXA scan compared to InBody or smart scales?

DEXA is the medical gold standard for body composition. InBody and bioimpedance devices estimate body fat using electrical current and can be off by 5–10%. Smart scales are typically worse. DEXA directly measures bone, lean tissue and fat in grams, the same technology used in NHS osteoporosis clinics. If you want a measurement you can actually base decisions on, DEXA is the only test worth doing.

How long does a DEXA scan in Stockport take?

The scan itself takes 7 minutes. Including your results walkthrough and targeted goal advice, plan for 30 minutes at B-Fit Gym, Hazel Grove. Free parking is available on-site. Your full medical PDF report follows by email within 48 hours.

Is the radiation dose from a DEXA scan safe?

Yes. The dose from a single DEXA scan is roughly equivalent to one day of natural background radiation, around 1/400th of a standard chest X-ray. It is considered safe for repeat scans every 3–6 months. DEXA is not recommended during pregnancy.

Can DEXA detect osteoporosis or low bone density?

Yes. The same DEXA scanner that measures body composition also measures bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and hip, the same protocol used for osteoporosis screening in the NHS. We report T-scores and Z-scores in your full report so you have the data you'd get from a bone-density clinic without the referral wait.

How much does a DEXA scan cost in Stockport?

A standalone DEXA scan is £120. The DEXA + RMR bundle is £210. Multi-test bundles (DEXA + VO2 Max + RMR) offer the biggest savings, see our bundles page.

How often should I get re-scanned?

Most clients book DEXA every 3–6 months to track body composition changes. For bone density tracking, every 12–24 months is usually appropriate. Clients tracking body recomposition ahead of the Stockport 10K or a peak training block typically re-scan every 3 months.

What do T-score and Z-score mean on my DEXA report?

Your DEXA bone density report includes two scores. The T-score compares your bone density to a healthy 30-year-old of your sex (so it tells you your osteoporosis risk). A T-score of -1.0 or higher is normal; -1.0 to -2.5 is osteopenia; below -2.5 is osteoporosis. The Z-score compares you to people of your own age and sex. A Z-score of -2.0 or lower suggests something unusual is affecting your bone density and warrants investigation.

What does the visceral fat (VAT) number on my report mean?

Visceral adipose tissue is the fat stored around your internal organs. It's far more metabolically active and dangerous than subcutaneous fat. High VAT is independently linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, even in people with a normal BMI. DEXA reports VAT in grams. Less than 100 g is considered low risk, 100–160 g is moderate, and above 160 g is elevated. The TELOMYX team will walk you through what your specific number means for your risk picture.

Are there any reasons I shouldn't have a DEXA scan?

DEXA is not recommended during pregnancy due to the small radiation dose. It's also not advisable to scan within 72 hours of a barium meal or contrast-enhanced CT. Metallic implants in the scan field (hip replacements, spinal hardware) don't stop a DEXA scan but will exclude that region from measurement. Let us know in advance of any implants and we'll confirm suitability.

What's a healthy body fat percentage according to DEXA?

Healthy body fat ranges depend on age and sex. As broad reference points: for women, around 21–32% is generally considered healthy; for men, around 8–19%. Athletes typically sit at the lower end. Your DEXA report includes age- and sex-matched reference ranges so you can see exactly where you sit relative to people of your age and sex.

What does a DEXA scan NOT measure?

DEXA does not measure your cardiovascular fitness (that's VO2 Max), your metabolic rate (that's RMR), your hydration status, blood markers, hormones, or specific muscle groups beyond regional totals (arms, legs, trunk). It also won't tell you whether the muscle you have is functional strength. DEXA's job is to tell you precisely what your body is made of in grams. It's the gold standard for that one question.
